San Francisco Muni Fares To Increase First Time In 5 Years Starting September 1st

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— For the first time in five years, the basic fare to ride San Francisco's Muni is going up on September 1st.

Basic adult fare is rising 25 cents as part of an increase system that was adopted back in 2009.

"It was the result of the board making a decision not to increase fares at a large amount, but incrementally over the years and this will be the first time since that formula was put into place that we do raise the daily cash fare," Muni spokesman Paul Rose said.

He noted that fast passes are going up as well.

"The adult A fast pass, which includes rides on BART is currently $76 dollars [a month] and will increase to $80. The adult M fast pass, which only includes Muni rides is currently $66 and will increase to $68."

Youth will still ride for free and there's no fare hikes for seniors and disabled riders who may even be added to the free-ride program later in the year.
