San Francisco Fire Department Celebrating 150 Years Of Saving Lives

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco's Fire Department is celebrating 150 years of saving lives in the city with a new logo.

It was 1866 when the department was formed, Chief Joanne Hayes-White told KCBS.

"We became a paid, professional department because of six or seven fires that literally nearly swept our city from the map," Hayes-White said.

The logo for the anniversary was designed by students at Academy of Art University depicts a cityscape with the fire hydrant credited with saving much of the city during the 1906 firestorm in a mythical Phoenix bird rising from the ashes.

"The San Francisco Fire Department's 150^th Anniversary project was a true roller coaster. When we got assigned the project, most of the students didn't have a clue about the San Francisco Fire Department and what it stands for," one of the graphic artists involved with the project said.

The new logo will be on display for about a year.
