Police Shoot, Kill Suspected Car Thief Near AT&T Park
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Police in San Francisco killed a suspected car thief and wounded another suspect in a shooting near AT&T Park Tuesday night.
The shooting happened at Second and Bryant streets in the South of Market, police Officer Gordon Shyy said.
According to police, a crime suppression unit patrolling the area around 9 p.m. noticed a car near Third and Bryant with three people that looked like they were looking for a vehicle to steal Police said the suspects parked their car, got out and burglarized a Mercedes SUV.
Officers moved in to arrest the suspects after they returned to their car. Police said the driver of the car pointed a handgun at an officer. When the officer told the driver to put down the gun, the driver did not listen and the officer shot the driver. Another round, either from the officer or the driver, hit the passenger in the back seat.
The third person in the car ran away, but police were able to catch up with him.
Both the driver and passenger were taken to San Francisco General Hospital. The driver did not survive his injuries. The passenger's condition is not known as of late Tuesday night.
Tuesday's shooting took place a few blocks from where the Giants played the Nationals in the NL Division Series.
