2 Killed In Head-On Crash Between Van And SamTrans Bus On El Camino In San Mateo

SAN MATEO (KCBS) — Two people have been killed in a collision between a van and a SamTrans bus on El Camino Real in San Mateo Friday.

A green passenger van, with a male driver and female passenger, was traveling southbound on El Camino Real, near 9th Avenue, crossed over the number-two lane and the center divider striking the bus head-on at about 12:45 p.m., authorities said.

SamTrans spokeswoman Jayme Ackerman said both the van's occupants were killed.

Emergency crews, the witness said, had to extract the driver from the van and that person appeared to be severely injured.

The bus driver was not injured but was been removed from service pending drug and alcohol tests, as is standard procedure.

Ackerman also said that they will also investigate video camera aboard the bus.

Police said at least three people on board the bus were injured but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

A detour has been up at 12th Avenue that will take commuters though downtown San Mateo and return to El Camino Real at about 9th Avenue.

Passengers seeking seeking bus service along El Camino Real were being advised to walk north of the accident scene to 9th Avenue or beyond to catch their bus, Ackerman said.
