CPSC Announces Recall Of 1 Million Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Phones
WASHINGTON (CBS SF) – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of 1 million Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones Thursday because of the risk of battery explosions and fires.
At a news conference, CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye said the product presents "such a serious fire hazard" and that consumers should take advantage of the recall "right away."
Galaxy Note 7 owners should visit Samsung's website and enter the device's IMEI or serial number to determine if their device is among those recalled. Consumers will have the option to either receive a replacement or a refund.
Thursday's announcement follows an announcement by the CPSC last Friday, urging owners to turn off their devices due to the fire danger. Last week, the FAA warned airline passengers not to use the phones in flight.
Samsung announced a global recall of the Galaxy Note 7 two weeks ago, after confirming 35 instances of fires and explosions. About 2.5 million devices were sold worldwide before the global recall was announced.
