Hazmat Crews Clean Up Chemical Spill At Rohnert Park Creamery

ROHNERT PARK (CBS SF) – More than 200 gallons of a cleaning product were spilled at a creamery in Rohnert Park on Friday morning, prompting a hazmat response and a shelter-in-place for nearby businesses.

According to the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, crews were called to the Straus Family Creamery at 655 Park Court shortly after 8:50 a.m.

According to authorities, a container carrying a blend of nitric acid and phosphoric acid was punctured by a forklift while it was offloaded from a semi-truck.

The chemicals are used to clean and sanitize holding tanks and transfer pipes for dairy products, officials explained. About 250 gallons of the mixture had spilled.

After authorities arrived, a shelter-in-place order was issued for businesses along nearby Martin Avenue.

Hazmat crews determined the chemicals were safe enough to dilute and that the business had a filtered cistern system preventing hazardous materials from running off into storm drains and waterways. After the material was diluted, the shelter-in-place was lifted around 10:20 a.m.

No injuries were reported.
