Robbery Suspects Flee Onto Oakland Elementary School Grounds; 1 Arrested

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- An elementary school was placed on lockdown Friday after three robbery suspects reportedly ran onto the campus while fleeing from police officers.

Oakland Housing Authority police said around 11 a.m. a Lyft driver picked up two men and a 17-year-old boy in San Leandro and dropped them off at 70th and Holly in Oakland.

When the driver stopped the three suspects robbed the driver of their cell phone and fled. As the driver was reporting the incident to an OHA officer, the driver spotted the suspects getting into another Lyft, OHA police said.

The suspects were tracked down about a mile and a half away. They fled onto the grounds of Futures Elementary School at 6701 International Blvd. in East Oakland, according to Oakland Unified School District. The school is on the grounds of the former Lockwood Elementary School which closed in 2009.

A lockdown of the school was ordered and the 17-year-old was found hiding in the bathroom of the school and was arrested, OHA police said. The two adult suspects are still at large.

By 1:45 p.m. the lockdown had been lifted and students were being released to their parents, according to the school district.

The school is also adjacent to two other schools, Coliseum College Prep Academy and Roots International Academy.
