Highway 101 Worker Killed In Redwood City When Driver Veers Off Road

REDWOOD CITY (KCBS) -- A highway road worker was killed Tuesday after a car ran off of Highway 101 in Redwood City and into a crew worksite.

The crash happened shortly after 11:00 a.m. along the shoulder of the highway.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Art Montiel said three people were hit after the car crashed through a fence near the Marsh Road exit off of southbound 101.

Montiel initially said the female driver of a black Mercedes Benz appeared to have had a medical emergency behind the wheel, but an investigation is being conducted to see if drugs or alcohol may have been involved or what exactly lead to the creash. She was transported to Stanford Medical Center with minor injuries.

Aside from the worker killed, another worker suffered minor injuries according to the CHP.

The workers were part of crew contracted by the County of San Mateo County to do work for Caltrans.

The far right southbound lane of the highway was closed as authorities investigated the scene.
