Residents Protest Plan For Coal Train From Utah To West Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Residents lined up at Oakland City Hall Tuesday to rail against a plan to export 3 million tons of coal a year from Utah to an export terminal in West Oakland.

Protesters sent a letter to Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf opposing the transport of coal into Oakland.

And Tuesday night, Mayor Schaaf responded with a blunt statement: "I remain strongly opposed to the transport of coal and crude oil through our city...i am requesting that the city council postpone contracting with ESA."

And the Oakland City Council did just that. They delayed a vote on whether to hire Environmental Science Associates to conduct a $250,000 health report on the impacts of coal in West Oakland.
