Residents Ordered To Evacuate Hercules Neighborhood After Construction Crew Hits 4-Inch Gas Line

HERCULES (CBS SF)-- A Hercules neighborhood was evacuated Tuesday morning due to a gas leak, but crews were able to cap the leak, according to Contra Costa County emergency officials.

An evacuation was ordered at 9:51 a.m. between North and South Front streets. The gas leak was in the area of San Pablo and Sycamore avenues, county officials said.

Evacuees were sent to Duck Pond Park on Sycamore Avenue. An automated warning phone call was issued that said anyone evacuating should not use their car to avoid ignition sources.

KCBS reporter Dave Padilla went to the scene and was told a third-party construction crew, where row-houses are being built, hit a four-inch gas line around 8:30 a.m.

PG&E remained at the scene after the leak was capped at about 10:45.
