Report: Thousands Of Oakland Apartments Could Collapse In A Major Earthquake
OAKLAND (CBS) -- Thousands of apartments in Oakland could be in danger of collapsing in a major earthquake, like the one due on the Hayward fault.
A report comes after the City of Oakland and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) looked at 1300 "soft story" buildings. These units have less structural support because they sit atop open spaces (like garages) on the ground floor.
The report found 22,000 rental units are at risk of failure. One out of 10 renters in Oakland lives in such a dwelling.
The report said it would cost an estimated $10,000 per unit to retrofit them.
