Repairs Expected To Slow Down Golden Gate Bridge Traffic This Weekend

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Anybody headed north over the Golden Gate Bridge beginning at 9 p.m. Friday had better be prepared for a possible slowdown. Bridge crews preparing to install a moveable median barrier in January are closing the far right lane until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Alexander Avenue and the Vista Point ramps will close as well as a part of the major renovation of the toll plaza area.

"People coming southbound on the Golden Gate Bridge are going to see something new and that is that we only have six booths open," said Kary Witt, the Golden Gate Bridge manager.

He said with all the electronic toll collection that lanes seven through eleven aren't needed.

"The changes in lanes seven and eight are to accommodate the movement of the barrier transfer machines," said Witt.

In addition, Witt said that sometime early next week (either Monday or Tuesday) the bridge's clock on the canopy will be taken down for a complete restoration. Witt said the 77-year-old icon will be back up and running sometime before year's end.
