Raiders Owner Mark Davis Calls For Suspensions With Pay In Domestic Violence Cases

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - The 49ers have heard heaps of criticism for continuing to play defensive lineman Ray McDonald despite his arrest last month on domestic violence accusations. The owner or the Oakland Raiders says he's got a solution for teams that want to protect the due process rights of players: sit them and pay them.

Mark Davis told the San Jose Mercury News that players "accused or arrested" for domestic violence should be suspended with pay.

"I want to make sure it fits the legalities and with what the union wants, but I just think that's the only thing that makes sense for us now," said Davis.

The McDonald case comes amid growing attention to the league's domestic violence problems. The botched Ray Rice suspension and the inconsistent response to the Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy cases have many saying we need to "get it right" when it comes to a uniform policy on these issues.

"I see what the 49ers and Jed [York] are going through and what they're saying, 'Innocent until proven guilty' and that's the American way," Davis told reporter Tim Kawakami. "But I think we have to get this right."
