Unconscious Man, Possible Meth Lab Found In Oakland Motel

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A man was discovered unconscious with a possible methamphetamine lab in a hotel room in Oakland's Jack London Square Tuesday morning, police and fire officials said.

The injured man was discovered when firefighters arrived to investigate reports of suspicious smoke in a room at the Jack London Inn at 444 Embarcadero West at 11:37 a.m., police and fire officials said.

He was taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to police. Evidence in the room suggested he was operating a meth lab there.

A hazmat crew was called into the area and portions of the 4-story, 110-room hotel were evacuated as they cleaned up the mess. Streets in the area were shut down as well, police said.

The scene took place shortly after a ceremony was planned nearby to commemorate 140th birthday of the hotel and surrounding area's namesake, writer Jack London.
