Police shoot man allegedly armed with knife in San Francisco's Tenderloin District

Knife-wielding man shot by police in San Francisco's Tenderloin District

Authorities are investigating a shooting by police in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood on Monday night that injured a male suspect allegedly armed with a knife.

At 10:22 p.m. Monday, officers responded to reports of someone armed with a knife who was allegedly threatening people in the 300 block of Jones Street.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers engaged the suspect. During the encounter, a shooting occurred and the suspect was struck by gunfire, police said in a statement.

Officers and paramedics gave first aid to the suspect, who was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

At a press conference Tuesday morning, police spokesperson Sgt. Kathryn Winters said more than one officer was involved but she was not able to say how many.

"Officers made consistent attempts to de-escalate the situation and try and engage the individual in order to try and broker a peaceful resolution. Unfortunately, that was unsuccessful," said Winters. " I don't have the exact details of what the suspect did that precipitated the shooting, but at some point during the interaction, officers felt it was necessary to use deadly force."
