Police Investigating Fatal Collision Between Pedestrian And Vehicle In San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Officers are investigating a fatal collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian in San Jose Wednesday morning, police said.

The accident was reported around 12:30 a.m. and occurred at Tully Road and Lanai Avenue, according to San Jose Police Sgt. Heather Randol.

Officers responding to the scene found an elderly victim struck by a vehicle, and learned that the vehicle was traveling east on Tully Road when it struck the pedestrian who was crossing southward across Tully Road, Randol said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene while the driver remained nearby to cooperate with the investigation.

Jane, an employee at a nearby A Jack in the Box restaurant who didn't want to use her last name, told KCBS that she was saddened but not surprised about the collision.

Many homeless people in the area, she said, cross Tully Road and then "go inside here and hang out."

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected as a factor in the collision at this time, according to Randol.

Eastbound Tully Road at Lanai Avenue will be closed until approximately 6:30 a.m., police said.

No further information was available.
