Update: Off-duty Oakland police officer involved in non-fatal shooting near school

OAKLAND – Police in Oakland are investigating a non-fatal shooting Wednesday morning involving an off-duty OPD officer, authorities said.

The shooting occurred just before 9:30 a.m. in the 800 block of 35th Street, two blocks from Hoover Elementary School. Initially there was no information regarding injuries or the circumstances surrounding the shooting from authorities.

The public was asked to avoid the area after the incident. The school was placed on lockdown during the incident "out of an abundance of caution." It was later reopened.

Police later confirmed that they were contacted regarding the shooting by the off-duty officer who said they
"were just involved in an officer-involved shooting with an individual who they believed to be armed."

In a Facebook live video, Oakland Police Officer Kim Armstead said that arriving officers met the off-duty officer and, after a brief search, found a loaded firearm.

Armstead said a short time later, a person arrived at an area hospital with gunshot wounds in stable condition  and is believed to be the person shot in the officer-involved shooting. Police did not say whether the person who was shot had discharged a weapon or if they were connected to the loaded firearm found at the scene.

The off-duty police officer, who was not identified, was not injured in the incident. Police said that there were no other known individuals involved in the shooting and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Oakland Police Department's internal affairs division The off-duty officer is being placed on administrative leave as is protocol with officer-involved shootings
