Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Shot Police Dog In Yuba County
MARYSVILLE (AP) - Northern California authorities say they shot and killed a man after pursuing him across Yuba County and after he fired at a police dog.
The Yuba County Sheriff's Office said Friday that Wheatland police attempted to pull over a drunken driving suspect around 2:30 a.m. Friday.
The sheriff's department said the suspect was travelling at about 90 mph and that the driver turned off his vehicle's lights once he saw the patrol vehicle.
Initially, the driver cooperated with the officer and handed over his identification, but then drove off, according to the sheriff's department.
The driver was finally stopped with spike strips as he entered Marysville some 13 miles away.
Authorities from the Yuba County Sheriff's Department, Marysville police, Wheatland police and the California Highway Patrol conducted another traffic stop.
Authorities ordered the man to surrender but he refused, according to the sheriff's department.
They used a county sheriff's canine to bring the suspect out, but he fired at the dog with a handgun. Authorities returned fire and the suspect died at the scene.
The dog was wounded in the neck and is expected to survive.
An investigation is pending.
The identity of the deceased man was not immediately released on Friday.
