An Oakland police spokersperson said Friday night that prior to the shooting, an Oakland traffic officer observed a motorcyclist driving recklessly in the area of 98th Avenue and Bancroft Avenue.

The traffic officer did not pursue the motorcyclist but the officer notified the department's helicopter unit, which followed the motorcyclist as he continued to drive recklessly throughout various parts of east Oakland.

Later, the motorcyclist was involved in a solo vehicle crash in the area of 105th Avenue and International Boulevard. Following the crash, the motorcyclist fled on foot, running eastbound toward 107th Avenue and International Boulevard, where he attempted an armed carjacking.

Officers in the area gave verbal commands for the man to drop the firearm but he refused to comply. Officers discharged their firearms and struck the armed individual.

Medical personnel arrived on scene and transported the individual to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

No officers were physically injured during this incident.
