Armed Suspect Search Briefly Shuts Down I-880 In Fremont

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- Police stopped traffic in both directions on Interstate Highway 880 near Fremont Thursday afternoon while searching suspects in a Millbrae robbery.

A traffic alert was issued at 3:35 p.m. as the southbound lanes were shut down and another alert was issued at 3:39 p.m. as the northbound lanes were closed.

Officers searched for the suspects in the area around Central and Mowry avenues in Newark, across Highway 880 from Fremont, after Fremont police spotted their vehicle heading south and the suspects fled on foot.

A total of four male suspects were eventually detained, and the roadway was reopened Thursday afternoon.

Police believe the suspects were involved in a robbery in Millbrae and came across the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge to the East Bay.

They declined to disclose further details, however, saying that the investigation is ongoing and multiple agencies are involved.
