Police Activity Briefly Shuts Down University Avenue In West Berkeley

BERKELEY (KCBS)_ Berkeley police briefly shut down University Avenue in West Berkeley Tuesday afternoon between 6th and 8th streets after responding to reports of a man with a gun. While a weapon was found, there is no suspect custody.

Berkeley Police Watch Commander Lt. Andrew Rateaver said at 12:40 p.m. a report of a man with a gun came in at 7th and University Ave. Police units then rushed to the scene. When they got there, they received another report of a man with a gun at 6th and University, which prompted a complete shutdown of the area.

Police told KCBS two people were in an argument and one of them was armed with a gun. The weapon was discarded and the suspect apparently fled.

Listener Lee Bridges said she saw about a dozen police cars in the area as she got off Interstate-80 at University Avenue.

"I don't see anything suspicious like running people or gunfire, but the whole area is shutdown. People will have to go around. I'd recommend staying away from it until whatever it is gets sorted out."

University Ave. re-opened shortly after 1:30 p.m.
