Plans For Candlestick Park's Demolition Underway
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — For those that didn't make it Paul McCartney's concert on Thursday night, there is still one big blast to happen at Candlestick Park—though this one will include a real dynamite performance.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee will meet with Khofi Bonner, the executive vice president of Lennar Urban, next week to discuss the demolition of the stadium.
"My current belief, based on the information we have in working with the city, is there will be an event where a significant amount of the building will be imploded," he said. "Some deconstruction and an implosion is frankly the most environmentally appropriate way to take a building down."
Bids are currently being taken and Bonner said that next February or March, demolition experts are expected to partially dismantle the stadium and then implode it to make way for new development.
Lee said he has high hopes for the plans after the debris is removed.
"There are plans for housing, retail, a little bit of office but mostly a lot of homes and probably a bit of shopping malls and some entertainment," he said. "I'm excited that there will be thousands of new homes for people—a good portion of them affordable to everyone. We're working closely to make sure we turn the page on that chapter, so we're ready for it."
