Pittsburg Police Officer, 4 Others Hurt In Chain Reaction Crash During Bank Robber Chase

PITTSBURG (CBS SF) -- A Pittsburg police officer responding to a bank robbery got into a crash with two other cars and a motorcycle that sent five people to the hospital Monday afternoon, Pittsburg police said.

The robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank at 3001 Railroad Ave. was reported just before 1 p.m., when a suspect walked in and passed a note to a teller demanding money, police said.

The officer was driving with his emergency lights on and sirens blaring when he crashed into another car at the intersection of Loveridge and East Leland roads, according to police.

The crash caused a chain reaction. A third car and a motorcycle crashed as well.

The California Highway Patrol responded and five people, including the officer, were taken to hospitals, police said. The extent of their injuries was not immediately released.

The CHP is investigating the collision, which is standard procedure when officers are involved in crashes, police said.
