Pink Female Libido-Enhancing Pill Hits Store Shelves

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) -- The so-called "female Viagra" hit the pharmacy shelves Saturday.

The new pill known as Addyi is prescribed for women with low libido and approved for use in pre-menopausal women. It is not approved for use in post-menopausal women. The FDA says more studies are needed to determine whether it's safe and effective for them.

Unlike male sexual dysfunction drugs that work on blood flow, Addyi is thought to work on chemicals in the brain responsible for pleasure.

Doctors say it doesn't work immediately and has taken on a daily basis, over a period of time, to be effective.

Addyi is expected to be priced at $20 a month for patients with insurance. The drug also carries a black box warning because drinking alcohol while taking Addyi can cause low blood pressure and fainting.
