'Armed And Dangerous' Suspect Sought In Fatal South SF Shooting

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Police in South San Francisco are searching for 19-year-old Christian Omar Cruz, the suspect who allegedly pulled the trigger in Monday's fatal park shooting, according to authorities.

South San Francisco resident Cruz is considered armed and dangerous.

On Tuesday, the 20-year-old man who died in the incident was identified as Nicholas Gomez of South San Francisco, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

Officers initially responded around 2:45 p.m. Monday to a report of a group of people involved in an altercation in the 600 block of First Lane, police said.

As officers were responding, they received word the group left the area and walked to nearby Orange Memorial Park, located at West Orange Avenue and North Canal Street, according to police.

There, the altercation escalated and a person in the group took out a handgun and shot two people, police said. The victims each suffered a single gunshot wound to the abdomen and were taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

One of the victims, later identified as Gomez, died at the hospital. The other victim is in stable condition, according to police.

The shooting caused nearby schools and community centers to be placed on temporary lockdown, police said.

The shooter was last seen fleeing the area on foot, heading west through the park. Police have not released a possible motive for the shooting.

After a preliminary investigation, officers were able to identify Cruz as a suspect on Tuesday. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.
