Pedestrian Struck By VTA Commuter Train

SAN JOSE (CBS-SF) -- A man was injured when he was struck by a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority light-rail train in East San Jose Wednesday morning, transportation officials said.

The collision happened near North Capitol Avenue and McKee Road shortly after 10 a.m. between a man and train traveling on the Santa Teresa-Alum Rock line, VTA spokeswoman Stacey Hendler Ross said.

The train was heading north along North Capitol Avenue on a green light and struck the man, who was in the crosswalk.

The train operator blew the vehicle's horn and hit the brakes but was unable to avoid a collision.

The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to Regional Medical Center of San Jose. The extent of his injuries and condition were not immediately available.

She did not know if anyone on the train was injured or the number of people on board because passengers left after the collision.

Deputies with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office's transit patrol division spoke with witnesses in the area and will investigate the collision.

As part of standard protocol, the train operator will have to return to the agency's maintenance yard to undergo a screening that includes providing an account of the incident and making sure they were not under the influence, Ross said.
