A large segment of Highway 1 in Big Sur was reopened on Tuesday after rockslides caused a nearly 45-mile stretch of the road to be closed Monday, Caltrans District 5 said.

The closure originally extended from a mile south of Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, in Monterey County, to Ragged Point Inn, in San Luis Obispo County. Caltrans said the closure was due to rockslides and debris at various locations on Highway 1.

On Tuesday, crews reopened most of Highway 1, but a 7-mile segment remained closed.

The closure was in effect near Regent's Slide from 2 miles north of Lucia to a mile south of Esalen Institute. According to Caltrans, crews are waiting for a break in the rain so they can clear the debris.
