Palo Alto Teacher Suffers 1st & 2nd Degree Burns When Science Experiment Goes Wrong

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) – A teacher at Palo Alto High School is recovering from first-degree and second-degree burns, following a science experiment gone wrong Wednesday.

According to the Palo Alto Fire Department, a fire broke out during a science class at the school on Embarcadero Road shortly after 11:00 a.m. When firefighters arrived, the fire was already out.

Burns covered 18 percent of the teacher's body.

The fire damaged some books and papers in the classroom, but no students were hurt in the incident.

Firefighters said the cause of the incident is under investigation.
