Palo Alto Demands Fix For Loose Glass Shards Found In Sidewalks

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) – Officials in Palo Alto asked a contractor to repair sidewalks, after complaints that the polished glass in the sidewalks has become a hazard for pedestrians.

According to Palo Alto Weekly, "glass aggregate" was recently installed on sidewalks at California Avenue, as part of a streetscape project.

Resident Ronna DeVincenzi told the council pieces of glass have become loose, creating a hazard for people wearing sandals or who are barefoot. The resident also said the shards are also ending up on people's shoes and possibly on pets' paws.

City officials said they found parts of where the glass was installed incorrectly and said the problem will be resolved when the glass is replaced, the newspaper reported.

According to the city's website (.pdf) the California Avenue streetscape project also includes upgraded crosswalks, enhanced bicycle parking and a new fountain.
