Orphaned Sea Otter Pup From Peninsula Thriving At Chicago Aquarium

CHICAGO (CBS SF) -- An orphaned sea otter pup is beginning to thrive at the rehabilitation facility it was taken to after being rescued from a Peninsula beach.

In a video posted on YouTube titled "Playtime with Pup 681," the recovering sea otter is seen nursing from a bottle, eating tidbits and playing with toys inside her tank at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, where she is receiving round-the-clock care.

The aquarium posted the video Wednesday, one of a number of videos featuring the otter pup which is growing every day, according to the aquarium's website.

The pup was brought to the facility from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in late October where it was taken after it was found stranded and crying on Sept. 30 by a passerby on Coastways Beach in San Mateo County.

When found the pup only weighed 1 kg, which is tiny for a newborn sea otter.

Shedd Aquarium is one of the few facilities in the U.S. that has the ability to train stranded otter pups to survive in the wild after being rescued.

The aquarium plans a Google Hangout event next week for people to chat online and go behind the scenes of the pup's recovery.
