One Of San Francisco's Oldest Gay Bars May Be Closing After Rent Triples
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- One of San Francisco's oldest gay bars could be closing up shop.
According to the online publication 48 Hills, The Stud in the South of Market neighborhood is facing an uncertain future.
Its building has been sold and the rent is set to triple in September. The club's owner, Michael McElhaney, has also announced that he is retiring and moving to Hawaii.
The Stud's building was erected in 1908, which could qualify it for historical preservation status, and it's also possible it could qualify as a legacy business.
McElhaney held an emergency meeting last week to inform people of what was going on, and propose ideas for the future, saying he hopes the community can come together to save the space and if not that, save the bar in another location.
Following the meeting, some local residents announced they are forming a community co-op to buy the club.
