Oakley man accused of shooting at deputy arrested after standoff

Watch: Manhunt in Oakley neighborhood for person who shot at sheriff's deputy.

An Oakley man accused of shooting at a Contra Costa County sheriff's deputy was arrested after an hours-long standoff ended with him allegedly shooting himself, the sheriff's office said.

The incident began when the sheriff's office was called just before 11 a.m. and told someone was violating a restraining order. A deputy then located the suspect's vehicle on the 4300 block of Gold Run Drive in Oakley and initiated a traffic stop.

The suspect was identified as a 54-year-old Raymond Smith.

According to the sheriff's office, Smith allegedly shot at the deputy immediately after being stopped. The deputy was not hit and was able to shoot at the suspect. Following the shooting, the suspect ran into a neighborhood, which prompted a manhunt and shelter-in-place order for residents.

The sheriff's office said they soon learned Smith was barricaded at his home on the 2700 block of Placer Drive. A standoff ensued, which lasted for several hours.

The standoff ended when Smith allegedly shot himself. According to the sheriff's office, the SWAT team heard a gunshot as they approached the home in their armored vehicle.

First responders treated Smith, and he was taken to a hospital. The sheriff's office said he was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, one of which is attempted murder of a peace officer.
