Oakland's GoldieBlox Wins Contest For Free Super Bowl Ad

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) -- An company based in the Bay Area whose mission is to empower girls has just won a super honor. Oakland-based toymaker GoldieBlox has scored a free Super Bowl ad, as part of a contest hosted by software maker Intuit.

"This is one of the greatest days in my entire life," GoldieBlox founder and CEO Debbie Sterling told KPIX 5. "It was such a huge win for girls around the world to introduce them to concepts of engineering, science and math and make it cool."

The ad is worth a cool $4 million. In it, girls are seen tossing their girly toys. It's just a tease of what's to come.

GoldieBlox started with two employees less than two years ago. Today, they have 15 and just added a second factory in China. And they're prepared for a huge surge in toy orders and an audience of 100 million.

"It's always been my mission to bring this brand to the mainstream, to inspire girls around the world with a really positive role model," Sterling said.

GoldieBlox has already achieved YouTube fame after for another video that went viral at the end of last year, which spoofed the Beastie Boys song "Girls" and prompted legal action from the band. The toymaker said they are actively working to settle with the Beastie Boys.

Sunday's ad will be different. But the message will be the same.

"Don't underestimate girls," Sterling said.

GoldieBlox beat out 15,000 other small businesses across the country to win the grand prize. They were among the top four finalists and the company won after more than 1 million online votes were cast.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Intuit is throwing the company a big viewing party for all their employees.
