Oakland's GoldieBlox Settles Lawsuit With The Beastie Boys Over 'Girls' Parody Commerical
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- An East Bay toy company has settled its federal lawsuit against the Beastie Boys music group over its parody of the hit song "Girls".
GoldieBlox of Oakland had filed the suit against the hip-hop group last November as a preemptive move aimed at blocking any possible claims of copyright infringement shortly after the promotional video went viral. The Beastie Boys then counter-sued the toy maker.
An agreement to dismiss the claim was filed on Monday but details of the settlement were not released, according the the Oakland Tribune. It's not clear whether the settlement would have any effect on the Beastie Boys' claim. The group has a blanket ban on using their songs in ads.
The video, which shows young girls singing about science and engineering, was viewed millions of times before it was removed from YouTube.
