Oakland Police Department- FBI Collaboration Outgrows Existing Facilities
OAKLAND (KCBS)— Oakland Police Department has been working with the federal government on a program that gives OPD officers assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In addition, the agency will now pay for facilities in Oakland where its agents can work.
Since June of last year, Oakland has been a partner city with the federal government in the Violence Reduction Network and that partnership includes FBI support for Oakland police working to solve homicide cases.
"The FBI has been very active in helping us deal with interstate matters where individuals have gone to different cities or maybe there's witnesses across the U.S. that need interviewed," said OPD Assistant Chief Paul Figueroa.
He said the program has been very helpful, but the FBI agents need their own work space.
"The FBI is making a significant contribution to Oakland so that we can build a space that we can co-locate in a facility and work together on some of these key cases," said Figueroa.
The FBI is expected to contribute more than $100,000 to the building of an investigations center inside the OPD administration building.
