Oakland Police Shoot Erratic Man Allegedly Carrying Knife

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- An Oakland police officer shot an allegedly knife-wielding man in East Oakland Friday morning, police said.

The shooting happened in the 1000 block of 88th Avenue. At 9:47 a.m., someone flagged down two police officers on patrol there and said a man with a knife was nearby acting erratically, police Officer Frank Bonifacio said.

The officers got out of their car and found the man. A confrontation ensued and one of the two officers shot the man, Bonifacio said.

The man was taken to a hospital. Bonifacio did not immediately know his condition.

The shooting was the second involving an Oakland police officer this week. On Saturday morning, police opened fire on a man wielding golf clubs but missed him. Prior to that it had been 20 months since an Oakland police officer had fired at a person.

The two involved officers will likely be placed on paid administrative leave, despite that only one fired his weapon, Bonifacio said.

One of the officers was a recent recruit and was being trained by the other officer, but Bonifacio did not know which one fired his gun.

Both police officers should have been equipped with body cameras per department policy, but Bonifacio did not know yet if they were activated during the incident.

Oakland police and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office are investigating the shooting.
