Oakland Mayor Says Another Officer Being Investigated For Wrongdoing Unrelated To Sex Scandal

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Another Oakland police officer is on administrative leave pending the results of a new investigation into allegations of criminal wrongdoing, Mayor Libby Schaaf said Thursday night.

The officer has been identified as Sgt. Michael Gantt and city officials have not elaborated on the criminal allegations that led to the investigation.

"We are still not at liberty to discuss details of any ongoing investigation without risking compromise of the investigation and potentially jeopardizing our efforts to hold wrongdoers accountable," Schaaf said in a statement.

Schaaf said that state law prohibits the city from disclosing most personnel information about police officers, including internal affairs investigations.

She did say, however, that this investigation is not related to the ongoing sex scandal that led to other officers in a number of agencies being investigated.

"This is an effort to reassure the public that we are taking swift action to address every instance of misconduct," Schaaf said. "Oakland residents and the good men and women in the Oakland Police Department who nobly serve this community deserve nothing less."

Schaaf said she became aware of the allegations on Saturday and turned the investigation over to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office on Sunday. An outside investigator has also been retained to conduct a parallel internal affairs investigation.

District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said Wednesday that an inspector with her office has also been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation into allegations that the inspector may have been connected to the sex scandal currently rocking the Oakland police.
