Oakland Man Arrested In Berkeley Baseball Bat Attack
BERKELEY (KCBS) — A 23-year-old Oakland man faces attempted homicide charges after a violent exchange early Sunday morning that resulted with two men being struck with a baseball bat in a fraternity-house parking lot near the UC Berkeley campus, police said.
Frank Watson, of Oakland, was arrested and held for suspicion of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon and a probation violation, police said.
Police said a verbal argument erupted between two groups in parking lot of fraternity parking lot on the 2700 block of Durant Avenue shortly after 1 a.m.
Witnesses reported that punches were exchanged before a vehicle pulled up and a member of one of the groups, identified as Watson, allegedly went to that car's trunk, removed a baseball bat and returned to the scene striking two adult males over the head, causing significant injuries to both victims.
It wasn't immediately clear whether either of the victims is a Cal student or fraternity member. The name of the fraternity was not released.
Both victims were admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
According to police, Watson initially fled the scene but was caught by police a short distance from the crime scene.
