Suspect arrested in Mission District after car chase through San Francisco streets

San Francisco police officers swarm suspect after slow-speed pursuit

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Police chased a carjacking suspect through the city Tuesday afternoon in a pursuit that ended with officers swarming the suspected individual in a Mission District alley.

San Francisco police said officers from the Northern Station spotted a vehicle wanted in connection to a carjacking around 2:09 p.m. in the Presidio District.

After seeing the vehicle near Richardson Avenue and Francisco Street, police tried to pull the car over but the driver instead led officers on a chase. The sheriff's office and California Highway Patrol joined the chase, and by 2:40 p.m., numerous patrol cars were seen engaged in a slow-speed chase with the suspect through central San Francisco.

The vehicle had its tires blown out by a spike strip at some point, and the driver eventually came to a stop in the Mission District. According to witnesses, the driver got out of the car and appeared to be trying to approach another car, which drove away. Video shows him giving up on the car and running away from the scene.

Officers chased after him, and a standoff between him and a crowd of officers ensued near Enterprise Street. The standoff was brief, and it ended with his arrest after police charged at him.

This is a developing story. More details to come.
