No Plans For Oakland Officials To Canvass City For Warehouses Like 'Ghost Ship'

OAKLAND (KCBS) -- Officials in Oakland say they have no plans to canvass the city looking for warehouses like the Ghost Ship, saying they are focused on a "big picture" approach.

KCBS and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier says the city has received a number of complaints since the deadly fire on December 2, but officials don't want to make hasty decisions and are still trying to figure out how to handle illegal conversions and entertainment events staged without required permits.

Other cities in the Bay Area are taking a different approach.  San Francisco is sending inspectors to spot check a handful of buildings. The city of Richmond is scouring the streets and the internet, looking for illegal buildings and say they've found hundreds.
