Night Market To Breathe New Life Into Downtown San Jose

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – Night markets have become fixtures in cities worldwide so organizers hope one planned for San Jose will help make the downtown area an after-dark destination.

The market will be filled with artists, musicians and food vendors and will start later this summer in the Post Street neighborhood.

Jeremy Beene, who works in the Post Street area, believes it will inject a much needed touch of culture.

"San Jose is a very diverse place – a good mixture, melting pot of people," he told KCBS. "There just isn't enough culture."

To get the project off the ground, organizers have received $100,000 from the Knight Foundation.

"The opportunity with the night market is to reimagine a space – bring in vendors, artists, musicians and create more reasons for people to spend their evenings in downtown San Jose," Project director Danny Harris told KCBS.

Beene said he believes the market "is a step in the right direction."
