Former Bay Area Resident Narrowly Escapes France Truck Attack

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – A former San Francisco resident vacationing in France said she is lucky to be alive after narrowly escaping Thursday's terror attacks that killed more than 80 people.

Inga Romanoff was on holiday with her friends in Nice. Her hotel room overlooked the Promenade des Anglais where thousands gathered to watch fireworks celebrating Bastille Day, France's independence day.

She had just gone down to take video and mill about in the crowd when she heard gunshots and saw a white truck plowing through the crowd.

"The truck was actually going very fast. If you can imagine that promenade full of people, there was nowhere to run away," Romanoff told KCBS.

Romanoff tried to help one woman who fell down but she says no one else was helping others, they were just trying to get away.

On Friday, officials put up a white fence around the area to obscure the scene but Inga says she can't escape her memories.

"I have to change my itinerary because I keep seeing flashbacks in front of my eyes. I'm planning to another nearby city, just to get it out of my head," Romanoff said.

San Francisco resident Anna Murphy is flying out of the Nice Airport Friday and says there are armed police everywhere.

"They closed off the entrance to any buses or any vehicles going toward Terminal 1. Our buses were delayed, so we tried to get Uber and on the Uber app, they said they were not picking people up or taking people into Nice," Murphy said.

Murphy said the locals are saddened but not shocked given last year's Charlie Hebdo murders and the November Paris attacks.
