NFL Rules Will Not Allow KPIX To Air Second NFL Game

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS-SF) –  If you are looking for the second NFL game on CBS Sports this Sunday, you will not be able to watch it because the NFL broadcast rules prohibit KPIX from airing the game.

There are only two NFL markets in the country that have two teams -- the Bay Area and New York.

By NFL Rules, a station may not broadcast the second game of a doubleheader if there is a "home" NFL game on at the same time.

If KPIX broadcasts an Oakland Raiders "away" game at 10 a.m. and the San Francisco 49ers play at home in the afternoon, the station is prohibited from airing the second doubleheader game.

Again, this is an NFL rule.

Also, which network (mostly CBS and FOX) carries a particular game is determined by the "away" team.

So if the Denver Broncos play the Raiders in Oakland then it's a CBS game.  If an NFC team like Green Bay plays the Raiders Oakland then it's a Fox game because of Green Bay.

There are four weekend doubleheaders KPIX is prohibited by NFL rules from broadcasting this season.

Sunday, November 8

KPIX will air the Oakland @ Pittsburgh game at 10 a.m. PST.  Atlanta is at SF at 1 p.m. (KTVU/Fox).

Sunday, November 15

KPIX has been assigned the Cleveland @ Pittsburgh game at 10 a.m. PST.  While the SF 49ers have a "bye" on this day, Minnesota is at Oakland at 1 p.m. PST (the "away" team determines which network carries the game.  Minnesota is an NFC team so KTVU (Fox) will air the game and KPIX is "blacked out" of a second game.

Sunday, November 29

KPIX will air the Oakland @ Tennessee game at 10 a.m. PST.  Arizona is at SF at 1 p.m. (KTVU/Fox).

Sunday, December 20

KPIX will be assigned an NFL game at 10 a.m. possibly the Tennessee @ New England contest.  Green Bay (NFC Team) is at Oakland at 1 p.m. and that game will be on KTVU/Fox.  KPIX is "blacked out" of a second game.
