New Red Panda Is San Francisco Zoo's Latest Star

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- SF Zoo visitors flocked the new red panda exhibit as soon as it opened Saturday to try to get a look at the new red panda named 'Tenzing' as he feasted on bamboo.

"He's so cute... as big as our dog at home," said zoo member Diane Davidson. "What a sweet face."

The 10-month-old panda was born at the Sacramento Zoo.

Red pandas are native to the Himalayas and western China. Less than 10,000 exist in the wild today.

A zoo board member came up with the panda's name. It comes from the Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay who climbed Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hilary.
