New Inmate Brawl At Santa Clara County Jail; Incident Out Of Camera Range

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A fight broke out among inmates at the Santa Clara County Jail Tuesday morning, according to a sheriff's spokesman.

The fight broke out on the second floor of the main jail on W. Hedding Ave. in San Jose, according to Sgt. James Jensen.

It happened on the second floor of the jail in an area where there are no security cameras, Jensen said. Detectives were interviewing inmates to get details on the circumstances that sparked the fight.

Investigators said ten inmates were involved in the fight. One of them required stitches after it was broken up.

Last month, officials installed security cameras paid for by Sheriff Laurie Smith after she determined buying them at Costco would be better than submitting the request through normal bureaucratic channels.

The next day, the cameras captured a huge inmate brawl.

In 2015, there were 225 altercations at the jail and the beating death of a mentally ill inmate by three sheriff's guards, who are now charged with murder.
