Napa Bar Fight Ends In Gunfire; 2 Wounded

NAPA (CBS SF) -- A dispute inside a downtown Napa bar early Friday ended in gunfire that left two men hospitalized with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Napa police said they were called to Downtown Joe's Brew Pub in the 900 block of Main Street around 1:05 a.m. on reports of a shooting.

Joe Peatman, the owner of Downtown Joe's Brew Pub, told KPIX 5 that two people came into his establishment and were having a good time when two other people came in and started arguing with them. That was when his staff heard threatening language and told them all to get out.

"I got a great staff, they're very experienced," said Peatman. "They know the signs of people getting angry and language getting out of control, and we're not going to tolerate that inside our building."

Police confirmed that their preliminary investigation showed that an argument between two groups inside the bar spilled over to the outside where gunfire erupted. The two groups were reportedly kicked out of a local restaurant and then eventually made their way to Downtown Joe's.

Arriving officers discovered an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was rendered medical assistance on the scene and then transported to Queen of the Valley Medical Center for treatment.

While police were on the scene of the shooting, they got reports of a second victim arriving at Queen of the Valley Medical Center for treatment.

"While investigating the shooting, officers were advised that a second victim who also suffered a gunshot wound, arrived at the Queen of Valley Medical Center for treatment as well," said Napa Police Lt. Gary Pitkin.

There was no immediate update on the condition of either man.

Paula Garcia has lived in the neighborhood for decades. She says these are the times we're living in.

"And it makes me think, we really need to get on top of the gun issue in general," said Garcia. "I go out to lunch most days and walk the dogs in daytime, and don't take any chances for sure."

On Friday, Downtown Joe's was open for lunch. Peatman said he wants to make sure his patrons know that he will always be there for them, every day of the year.

"You read about these things happening in different cities and stuff and you wonder, thank goodness it never happens to where we are. We don't have that to say now," said Peatman.

Detectives with the Napa Police Department's Investigation Team and Special Enforcement Unit were investigating. Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about this this matter was asked to contact Detective Josh Toney at 707-257-9507 or JToney@cityofnapa.org.
