San Francisco Police Now Carrying Drug To Reverse Opioid Overdoses

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco police officers will now have a way to save people from drug overdoses.

Oakland-based Harm Reduction Coalition is teaching officers how to administer Naloxone, an emergency antidote for opiate-related overdoses.

The police department says the number of prescription opioid painkiller deaths surpassed heroin-related deaths.

A harm reduction group called "The Dope Project" says Naloxone saved 300 lives last year alone.

San Diego County Sheriff's deputies are the only other law enforcement group in California also carrying the drug.
