Silicon Valley NAACP Urges Recording Of Police After Latest Deadly Shootings

SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- A Bay Area civil rights leader is calling for more people to record their interactions with police, in the wake of two fatal police shootings this week that were caught on video.

The aftermath of Wednesday's fatal police shooting of Philando Castile in Minnesota was live streamed on Facebook by the man's girlfriend. One day earlier, the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling by police in Louisiana was captured on cellphone video.

"I'm hurt, I'm angry and I'm scared," Jeff Moore, president of the San Jose / Silicon Valley NAACP, told KCBS.

Moore is encouraging people of color to use technology to document their interactions with police.

"With the instant streaming capabilities that citizens have, you're seeing it readily. Everyone needs to know that they are being recorded when they have an interaction with police," Moore said. "And it's going to be streamed live and posted on Facebook immediately."

The shootings are under investigation by local and federal authorities. Meanwhile, many police departments are also adding body cameras, however that rollout is slow and expensive.
