Multiple-Car, Fatal Crash Stalls Commute on Southbound I-680

PLEASANTON (CBS SF) -- A person died after their car sideswiped a big-rig, crashed and was struck by a pickup truck early Friday morning on southbound Interstate 680 in Pleasanton, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Events unfolded at around 5:50 a.m. south of Alcosta Boulevard.

After sideswiping the big rig going south, the driver of a Honda Civic lost control of the car. It crossed all lanes of traffic and crashed into the center dividing wall, CHP officials said.

The car came to rest sideways in the far left lane of the freeway and was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup. The crash killed the driver of the Honda, according to the CHP.

The driver of the big-rig kept going, unaware that the truck had been sideswiped. The name of the person killed was not available late Friday afternoon.

Three lanes of I-680 were closed for two to three hours as CHP officers investigated the crash.

Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role. The driver of the pickup suffered minor to moderate injuries, according to CHP officials.
