Lanes Reopen After Multi-Vehicle Fatal Accident On Hwy 12 In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- Fairfield firefighters and CHP were at the scene of a fatal major injury accident involving multiple cars on the eastbound lanes of Highway 12 west of Beck Avenue. All lanes of the roadway were blocked for over two hours.

At 4:35 p.m., the Solano County CHP office confirmed that there was one fatality in the five-vehicle accident.

The collision was reported around 3:22 p.m. at Beck Avenue, CHP Officer David Harvey said. Four vehicles were stopped at a red light in the No. 1 lane of Highway 12 at Beck Avenue when a white Mercedes Benz van struck the back of a Volkswagen Passat.

The Volkswagen struck the rear of a gray Honda sedan, which hit a BMW sedan, which struck the back of an Audi sedan, Harvey said. The male Volkswagen driver from Suisun City died at the scene, and occupants of three other vehicles suffered minor injuries, Harvey said.

CHP issued a severe traffic alert at 3:59 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic was being diverted off at Chadbourne Road. All lanes of the roadway were reopened at 6:05 p.m.
